Applied Technotopia

We scan the digital environment to examine the leading trends in emerging technology today to know more about future.

We have added a few indices around the site. Though we look to the future, we need to keep an eye on the present as well:

A quick look at the technological singularity.

First of all, a brief explanation. A technological singularity is a point, in the development of civilization, where the technological progress accelerates beyond a generation’s capacity to understand it.

I think that, right now, some of us are living in a singularity. If I ask my grandparents to send me an email — to give just one example — they’ll call the nearest psychiatric hospital to put me away.
To involve mankind as a whole, however, we have to implicate the concept of superintelligence.

Obviously a superintelligence doesn’t exist now, but, for many futurologists, if we continue to work in certain areas of technology — artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, genetic engineering — it could develop and make the concept of singularity an actual issue, no longer a matter of history and science fiction.

Further speculation here.

An interesting look at what the technological singularity means.

A quick look at the Singularity:

So what is this Singularity?

The technological singularity is the theoretical emergence of superintelligence through technological means. Since the capabilities of such intelligence would be difficult for an unaided human mind to comprehend, the technological singularity is seen as an occurrence beyond which events cannot be predicted. - Wikipedia

Singularity: What do you think about the technological singularity? Do you think it will happen? If so do you fear it?

What is the Technological Singularity?

The technological singularity is the hypothetical future emergence of greater-than-human superintelligence through technological means.Since the capabilities of such intelligence would be difficult for an unaided human mind to comprehend, the occurrence of a technological singularity is seen as an intellectual event horizon, beyond which events cannot be predicted or understood. - Wikipedia

Computer processing speeds and artificial intelligence (AI) tech certainly are making great strides in the direction of the Singularity.

Vernor Vinge Still Thinks the Singularity Will Happen Within 20 Years

“…I think calling that the Singularity is actually a very good term in the sense of vast and unknowable change. A qualitatively different sort of change than technological progress in the past.”

He still believes four pathways could lead to the development of the Singularity by 2030:

  • The development of computers that are “awake” and superhumanly intelligent.
  • Large computer networks (and their associated users) may “wake up” as a superhumanly intelligent entity.
  • Computer/human interfaces may become so intimate that users may reasonably be considered superhumanly intelligent.
  • Biological science may find ways to improve upon the natural human intellect.

When asked which one is more likely, he hinted that he sees a digital Gaia of networks plus people emerging [option 2]

Wow! I cannot wait for this. See the trailer below:

In Ray Kurzweil’s The Singularity in Near, a computer avatar named Ramona becomes self-aware and learns about being human from Tony Robbins. I’m pretty sure that’s how David from Prometheus got to be so creepy weird.
